The Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme supports UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong to build on their existing strengths and develop them into areas of excellence. It funds projects that are world-leading by international standards, with a maximum duration of five years and a ceiling of HK$75 million in direct project costs. Applications are open to those eligible for the RGC General Research Fund, with a preliminary proposal stage followed by full proposals and interviews.
Applicants must be eligible for the RGC General Research Fund (GRF). Each applicant can submit only one application as Project Coordinator under either the AoE Scheme or the Theme-based Research Scheme in the same exercise.
