The Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) funds collaborative research projects at UGC-funded universities in Hong Kong, focusing on themes of strategic importance to the long-term development of Hong Kong. It supports projects under four designated themes and 21 grand challenge topics, with a maximum duration of five years and a ceiling of HK$75 million per project. Applications are assessed on academic excellence, including world-leading qualification, impact to Hong Kong, team credentials, clear strategy, and sound structure.
Applicants eligible for the RGC General Research Fund (GRF) may apply. Each applicant can submit only one application as Project Coordinator under either the Areas of Excellence Scheme or the TRS in the same exercise.
