World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI)

The World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) was launched in 2007 by MEXT to build globally visible research centers in Japan with high research standards and outstanding environments, attracting frontline researchers worldwide. These centers are given high autonomy to revolutionize conventional research operations and administration in Japan. JSPS is commissioned by MEXT to conduct grant selection, project assessment, and support functions.
