The Walter Benjamin Programme enables postdoctoral researchers in the early career phase to conduct their own research project at a location of their choice, either in Germany or abroad, with support from the host institution. The programme aims to promote research careers by fostering mobility and thematic development, and generally requires applicants to change their research institution. Funding can be provided as a fellowship or a position, and special provisions apply for funding abroad.
Only postdoctoral researchers at an early career phase are eligible to apply. The project may not be based at a for-profit entity or one that does not permit publication of findings in a generally accessible form. Special provisions apply for funding abroad, including a requirement of at least three years of continuous research work in Germany immediately prior to submission for those applying for a fellowship abroad.
